The Lion of Judah

Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!

REVELATION 19:6

Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

REVELATION 19:11-16

There is much we can glean from these magnificent verses, and the first is that this rider on a white horse is not the same rider seen in Revelation 6:2. That rider is the antichrist; this rider is Jesus Christ. We know this for many reasons, but the most obvious is this rider is identified as the Word of God—a moniker attributed to Jesus in John 1:1. The fact that He wears many crowns establishes His supreme and absolute authority. He is the faithful and true one, He judges and makes war, He will strike the nations with the sword of His Word, and He alone treads the winepress of the fierce wrath of Almighty God. This pretty much does away with any idea that Jesus is more passive than the angry, wrathful God of the Old Testament. Jesus and the Father are one, including in their judicial and retributive nature. John 5:22 tells us this about Jesus as judge: “The Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son.”

Jesus first came as the Lamb of God to take away the sins of the world (John 1:29). But He is coming back as the Lion of Judah to judge the world and make war with His enemies. We are coming back with Him and are identified as the “armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean” (Revelation 19:14).
