As the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.

MATTHEW 24:37-39

So what is the purpose of the millennium? Here is my calculated speculation: God created man perfectly, and man chose death and imperfection over obedience and perfection. The world has been a mess ever since. God left man on his own in the sense of allowing him to do what he pleased, and man became so corrupt that God sent the flood, destroyed the wicked, and started over with eight righteous people.

After having left man to his own inclinations, God then gave man a law to follow and promised a redeemer who would repair what was broken in the garden. Man violated the law and killed the redeemer when He came. The redeemer rose from the dead, gave His Spirit to those who believed in Him, and empowered them to be His witnesses. Two thousand years later, things are once again as they were in the days of Noah.

My opinion is that the possible purpose of the millennium is that corruption has ruled the earth since the fall of man, and the world has never been run right. The millennium will be a time during which the perfect one Himself will rule the nations in righteousness. At the end of the 1,000 years, Satan will be released for a short time, and countless people from all over the world will side with the devil and fight against the King of kings and His people, but they will not prevail.

I believe we could argue that the millennium justifies the great white throne judgment because by that time, God will have come at man from every direction in the hopes of saving his soul. And yet massive numbers of people—after havingseen for 1,000 years how the world should be run—will still reject God and choose Satan. Thus, what happens at the great white throne is completely justified.
