There are some names that when mentioned create an instant association in the majority of people. Say the name Elvis and the “King of Rock” comes to mind, or say Michael Jackson and the “King of Pop” comes to mind. The name Hitler or Manson conjures thoughts of horrible wickedness, the name Lincoln makes us think of war and the tragic death of a great man, and the list goes on and on. Just the mention of a name can call to mind things associated with a person’s accomplishments or influence.
But there is one name above all others, a name that means “salvation.” We know him as Jesus, but in Hebrew His name is yehôshûa (Jehoshua), meaning “Jehovah saves.” In this age of political correctness, most people are comfortable with the word God or the concept of God. People have their own idea about who or what God is, so when you say, “God,” an image is generated in their minds in harmony with the being they have created.
But there’s one name that always causes a stir, and that is the name of Jesus, the one who saves. Say the name Jesus and now you’re talking about someone specific: the one who said He is the way, the one who said you must be born again, the one who said without Him we cannot see heaven and that loving Him includes obeying His commandments.
There is power in the name Jesus. God is a title of the one triune being we know in three persons. But to some, the word God can also refer to Zeus, a higher power, a state of consciousness, or even a spiritual essence. To them, God can be part of all matter, and all that exists is included in their concept of God. But friends, there can be no mistake in meaning when you say the name of Jesus. Speak His name and you will see the power of it even today. It’s a name unlike any other, so speak it and see what I mean!
