1 Why do the nations rage, and the people plot a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying 3 “Let us break their bonds in pieces and cast away their cords from us.” —Psalm 2:1-3
REGARDING the continual plotting of the nations against Israel and their God, we are in a day where the same concern applies to us! We daily find ourselves in the midst of attacks against Christians and against Christianity in general. The world seems to have turned upside down. What was once right is now considered wrong (Isaiah 5:20). We may find ourselves fearful for our children and the things to which they are daily exposed; we fear for our income, our jobs, our safety, and often for our very lives.
As we listen to the voice of rebellious man around us, there is an eerily familiar tone to what David, writing under the influence of the Holy Spirit, said of the world. He wrote, in essence, “Why do the nations plot against God [referring to Godhead], collectively seeking to break ‘their’ bonds and cast away their cords?” (Psalm 2:1-3).
“Bonds and cords” represent the Word of God, with its precepts and principles. Don’t we see a concerted effort today in our country to disparage the very Word of God that has brought much blessing and prosperity to our land? In fact, the desire of many is to deny that there is a God at all!
The Apostle Paul wrote, “The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and . . . deception among those who perish because they did not receive the love of the truth. . . . For this reason, God will send . . . strong delusion, that they should believe the lie . . . ” (2 Thessalonians 2:9-11).
This is a chilling warning that should cause us to search our own hearts. Christians (who are commanded by God to love their enemies and also to speak the truth in love) are considered enemies of “progress” who hold to beliefs considered irrelevant in our postmodern culture. Our world is in a condition of Godlessness, which leads to Lawlessness. In the midst of this, how do we maintain an attitude of Fearlessness? By always keeping in mind what we know to be true from Genesis through Revelation: in the end, the nations rage, but God wins!
